Progress on the Student Ministry Lounge

This summer there has been much progress on the new student ministry lounge. If you have not been upstairs above the gym lobby, here are some pictures of what you are missing out on. Hopefully the construction will be finished in time for our september premiere.

We are still working on the final details of the layout... but it is shaping up really well.

What do you think?

Homecoming... and a greatly delayed flight...

the last 24 hours have been a whirlwind. We finished the houses late Friday afternoon. Earlier in the day, each site had the opportunity to present the house and other gifts to their family and to have a little dedication service. There were many joyful tears shed as students and the families contemplated how incredible and unexpected God is to bring 5 teams of middle school students to build a house for those in need. The students went to provide a family with a house, but we blown away by the generosity of their hosts familes. They never expected to recieve so much from these "poor" people. In such a short amount of time, the families and the students had fallen in love with each, and now they will most likely never see each other again

Its strange to think of the magnitude of the impact of these things. One week. Total strangers. All involved, students and families, changed in such unexpected ways. A house... a simple decent place to live for 5 families... each with their own daily adversity... a new understanding of the image of God in all of humanity gained by our students.

All on our team agree that we received more than we brought. Our hearts come alive when we serve... its like the poor in material things are rich in life... and our material things can cause us to be so impoverished on the inside. The exchange of wealth sets us both free in new ways. For us... we have been free from the worries of wealth for a week, and it has allowed us to remember what is truly important about life and faith...

While Material wealth may make life more comfortable, it also complicates it. We have more stuff to manage, more meetings to attend, more activities to participate in, and no time for relationships and neighbors... These people we served had so little, but had such full hearts... they taught us about joy... and I hope we never forget.

Tender Moments from Mexico Mission trip

This is the first Mexico Video... we made it to help us remember the beautiful faces of the mexico children. Faces that smile though they are poor. Faces filled with joy... We came here to serve them in the name of Jesus, but instead found Jesus' face looking right at us. He was already here... and he served us this week.

See you tomorrow!

Mexico Day 5... Market and Beach-day!

Even on beach day, we witnessed God's protection in many ways!. As soon as we made it to the beach, 3 students and a leader paid for horse rides along the beach. It was great fun, until one of the horses bucked one of our students off, and then stepped on the student's leg. While there is a wonderfully colorful bruise forming, the students leg seems to be ok otherwise. I am pretty certain some of you were praying, because that could have gone worse in so many ways. So know that your prayers are so evident to us... even in accidents we see God's grace and protections.

After that the rest of our market day was uneventful. The beach was quite fun. The waves were cold, but most of our students took a quick swim and jumped some waves. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves. Students had a great time haggling with the vendors and trying to get the best possible deals. They almost didn't care what they were buying as long as they God to haggle.

Not all of the shopping in the market was for trinkets and memorabilia... we also were shopping for things to give as gifts to our families we were building houses for. Our students and leaders have been incredibly generous and have bought many awesome things for their families. Several groups bought small gas stoves that run on small propane tanks. Clearly the students realize now that they have been blessed to bless others.

Tomorrow we have our last day on our sites and we have to finish the houses. Four of us leaders are going early to make sure all our sites are caught up to where they need to be to finish the work tomorrow. After the students finish building the houses, they will have a little dedication service to present it to its new owners, and to present the gifts that they bought for them. This is an incredible time of joy and tears. The only tricky part is getting enough translators. Pray that we would be able to clearly and graciously communicate to each family how much God also loved them during these dedication services. Pray also that the work goes well tomorrow with no time consuming frustrations to limit the time of the dedication.

Our cooks are the unsung heroes of this week. In order to feed the students they are putting in close to 14 hours a day. Three of them are from our own ministry, so please pray that they would have the strength to finish well tomorrow.

This has been such a good trip. Your students are having such a wonderful time and have really bonded in wonderful ways. They miss you, but are so full of the joy that comes in serving our Lord God so purely. Thanks for your prayers, we need them to keep us moving.

Thanks so much
Brandon

Mexico 07, Day 4 wrap up

The students on our team have really been servants today. Several sites had trouble building the roof trusses and the students had to build them and then tear them apart because they were not right. This was discouraging, but the students just kept on plugging away.

Also today, there were many new kids at VBS, and at our sites. Our students are showing the love of Christ so clearly that many children are drawn to the sites to meet them and play with them.

Today a five year old girl names LizySoccorro came to talk to Emily and I. She was amazed by our cameras and watched us take many pictures. Finally she grabbed emily's camera and took pictures of us. After each picture she would show us the screen and then tell us in spanish, which we do not speak, all about it. She then started taking pictures of her friends and family on the site and then showing them the pictures as well. It was really cute!

Tomorrow we are going to have a day off from building to spend time at a beach and market. We are looking for stuff to buy for the families we are building houses for and we are relaxing. That means we will not be at the worksites and will have lots of work left to do on friday. Please pray for safety tomorrow and productivity on friday.

Tonight I read your comments to the students and they were moved that you were praying and caring for them. They are experiencing God in so many new ways. We had a large group sharing time, and they shared for almost an hour about all they had learned about God from being in mexico this week. It is so exciting to see young students loving Jesus, and loving others.

God Bless,

Day 4

Well, after great night of sleep, with no sick children, we are off to the work sites again. Today we will finish setting the walls, and hopefully get the roof started... we have already built most of the trusses, but they need to be lifted into place and then covered with plywood, and then tar and shingle rolls.
The students are looking a little tired today, but they are still excited to work. It is cool to see them forming new friendships and learning how to mesh as a group.
We have posted over 300 photos on flickr... right now it will only show 200 of them, but we are trying to fix this, and hopefully it will work right by tonight. Make sure to check them out!

Tacate Day 3

Today was another incredible day. Our students have a lot to be proud of as they have worked selflessly this week so far. Our houses are progressing nicely. Two of our sites have already started putting up walls, and the other three will do so before lunch tomorrow. This is great. Additionally we had around 100 children attend our first day of VBS and we think the number will continue to rise the rest of the week. The mexican children loving riding in the buses with the Americans on the way to VBS. They had a wonderful time today learning about Jesus.

Several sites have had trouble because they received incorrect directions for building the houses and some wrongly marked boards. Our adults and students have been so flexible in correcting the mistakes, even if it means pulling out nails they just drove in. Even with these complications, the work has been a joy.

One elderly woman that we are building a house for is so thankful. Everyday she buys purified water so she can make juice for our students and she cooks them lunch as well. The burritos yesterday were amazing I am told.

Many students have shared how this week of serving has been a huge blessing to them and their faith already. It is amazing home much easier it is to feel God when we get away from some of the distractions of our wealth!

A few prayer requests:
~Today we had a student who was sick through the night and had to stay back from the worksite... she is completely better now, but please pray for continued health for all of us and strength sufficient for the task

~Please pray for my (Brandon's) voice, as allergies, dust and lots of speaking during our evening worship gatherings have worn it down. I Still have to speak 3-4 more times this week... so I sorta need it to work.

~Please pray for our team to really jell and experience God together.

~Please continue to pray for God's working in our lives and in those that we are serving this week.

Thanks so much!

Day 2 wrap up...

As promised, I am filling in today's details... All five of our teams are off to a great start. The stories of the people that we get to build houses for are incredible. At some point we may share them with you, but right now lets just say that they all understand need at a different level than we do.

Our teams did wonderful. Each has met their family and started building their house for them. Today work was focused on meeting the families, organizing the supplies and framing up the walls. All of our teams have started on the walls and have done a great job.

Also most of our teams have met many local children who live in the Colonia (village) that they are building in. Today they need to get to know the kids so they can invite them to Vacation Bible School that starts tomorrow. It has been incredible to see the image of God in each of the precious children that we met today. The children are the highlight of the trip for most of our students. Today they played soccer with them while taking a break from building.

One cool thing has been how overjoyed and helpful our families are as we build for them. They seem mto really enjoy working along side us. Steve, one of our team leaders, had 4-5 Mexican children hammering nails and painting along with his team. These children were so excited to have the opportunity to work alongside our teens

After we got back from the worksite today most of our students took a jump in the pool to cool down.

We also had a wonderful evening session with awesome worship and a chance to share about what we are learning about God here.

There is lots more to tell... I will write again a few times tomorrow. I am sharing your comments with our students and leaders so please leave some!

Mexico 07 Day 2...

Well, were here. After a long trip including a bus ride to chicago, a flight to San Diego, another bus ride through Tijauna Mexico we arrived at our base camp at around 7 pm local time. The camp is beautiful, but a little rustic. The showers are cold water only and you cannot flush any paper down the toilets at all... but these are small things... The students and leaders are ready to GO and we are going to leave for our first day on the site in a few minutes. More later.
